Magento to Shopify Migration Services

Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source migrations onto Shopify and Shopify Plus — custom modules rebuilt as Shopify Functions and apps, B2B preserved, SEO and historical data protected, zero-downtime cutover.

Migrating from Magento to Shopify is one of the most common eCommerce moves of the past few years — and one of the most consequential. The platforms differ in architecture, extensibility, and operational model. A clean migration preserves the parts of the Magento store that work, rebuilds the parts that won't translate, and ships on Shopify with the same revenue, rankings, and customer relationships intact.

We specialise in the direction Magento / Adobe Commerce → Shopify / Shopify Plus. Years of building deep on both platforms means we know which custom modules become Shopify Functions, which need App Proxy or private apps, which collapse into native Shopify features, and which can finally be retired. For broader migration directions across Magento, Adobe Commerce and Shopify, see our replatforming approach. For a deeper look at the platforms themselves, see our platform notes.

Why merchants move from Magento to Shopify.

Four reasons we hear repeatedly when teams reach out about this migration.

Infrastructure

No more hosting and patch fatigue

Shopify is fully hosted. Patching, scaling, PCI, and uptime are Shopify's problem, not yours. Teams running self-hosted Magento or Adobe Commerce Cloud often move to free up engineering time for features that actually drive revenue.

Speed to ship

Faster iteration on the storefront

Shopify's developer surface — Liquid, Theme app extensions, Functions, Hydrogen — lets small teams ship changes quickly without the deploy ceremony of a full Adobe Commerce build pipeline. Time from idea to live on the site drops sharply.

Total cost

Lower total cost of ownership

The licence and hosting line items are visible. The real saving is the hidden one — fewer engineers needed to keep the platform alive, fewer agency hours on patches and infrastructure, fewer emergency incidents. For most mid-market merchants the maths comes out clearly in Shopify's favour.

Ecosystem

App ecosystem and merchant tooling

Shopify's app store, theme ecosystem, and merchant-facing admin reduce dependence on bespoke development for routine needs. The team running the store day-to-day usually adapts to Shopify's admin in days rather than weeks.

What gets rebuilt on Shopify.

The work isn't a like-for-like port. It's a deliberate rebuild of the parts that don't translate, on Shopify's primitives.

Custom modules

Modules → Shopify Functions

Cart rules, discount logic, shipping/payment customisations, and validation logic move to Shopify Functions. Functions execute server-side at the platform level — fast, reliable, and the modern replacement for Shopify Scripts.

Integrations

Integrations → App Proxy & private apps

ERP, CRM, PIM, 3PL, and custom API integrations are rebuilt as private apps using Admin GraphQL, webhooks, and App Proxy where customer-facing endpoints are needed. We map each integration to the right Shopify primitive instead of forcing one shape onto everything.

Theme

Theme → Liquid storefront

The Magento theme — usually Luma-derived or a heavily customised PWA — is rebuilt in Liquid. Existing UX patterns that convert are preserved; the rebuild is structural, not a redesign. A Hydrogen storefront is an option when headless makes business sense.

B2B

B2B → Shopify Plus B2B

Magento B2B Commerce features — company accounts, customer-specific catalogues, price lists, payment terms, quote requests — map onto Shopify Plus B2B's Companies, Catalogs, and B2B API. Where Shopify lacks a primitive, we build it as a private app on Plus.

Checkout

Checkout customisations → Checkout Extensibility

Magento checkout modules are reimplemented with Shopify's Checkout Extensibility — UI extensions, Functions for shipping and payment customisations, and post-purchase pages. PCI scope shrinks; the checkout itself stays Shopify-managed.

Admin tools

Admin tools → Embedded apps

Internal Magento admin tools — bulk editors, custom reports, vendor portals — become embedded Shopify admin apps using App Bridge. Same workflows, fewer surprises for the operations team after cutover.

Magento feature → Shopify replacement.

The things you can't afford to lose.

Order & Customer History

Full historical data — orders, customers, addresses, customer groups, store credit, gift cards. Sample-validated after every transfer pass.

SEO Rankings & Traffic

Every Magento URL mapped to a Shopify destination. 301 redirects, canonicals, schema and metadata preserved. Post-launch ranking monitoring with a recovery plan if anything regresses.

Integrations

ERP, CRM, payment, shipping, 3PL, PIM, and custom APIs — every integration rebuilt on Shopify primitives and tested in staging before go-live.

Custom Business Logic

Pricing rules, customer-segment workflows, tax logic, fulfilment routing — audited, then rebuilt as Functions, replaced with native Shopify features, or retired. Never silently lost.

Payment Flows

Payment gateway re-integration with full transaction testing — refunds, partial refunds, captures, recurring billing — before any real customer touches the new store.

Uptime

Zero-downtime cutover where feasible: parallel environments, final delta sync of recent orders, DNS swap during a low-traffic window. A short maintenance window when that's the safer call.

From discovery to post-launch.

01

Discovery & Audit

Full inventory of the Magento store — extensions, data structures, integrations, SEO assets, B2B logic, theme. Output is a written scope, risk register, and timeline before any code is committed.

02

Architecture & Plan

Shopify target architecture mapped, modules categorised rebuild/replace/retire, URL mapping drafted, integrations specified, cutover strategy chosen. Reviewed and signed off before build.

03

Build & Migrate

Parallel build on Shopify: Liquid theme, Functions, private apps, integrations, data import. Multiple migration passes against staging to surface issues early.

04

Test & Validate

Functional, integration, payment, and SEO testing on staging. Sample-based data validation. Final dry-run cutover on a clone to time the production switch precisely.

05

Cutover

Final delta sync of recent orders and customer changes, DNS swap, real-time monitoring during the switchover. We stay on standby through the first business day.

06

Post-Launch

SEO rank monitoring, integration health checks, performance tuning, rapid response to post-launch issues. Smooth handoff or an ongoing support relationship.

Magento to Shopify, answered.

Will moving from Magento to Shopify hurt our SEO?

Not if the migration is done properly. SEO preservation is one of the highest-priority workstreams. We map every Magento URL to its Shopify destination, set 301 redirects, preserve canonicals, retain metadata, and monitor rankings post-launch. Most stores see a brief settling period of 2–4 weeks before traffic stabilises at the same level or higher.

What happens to our custom Magento modules on Shopify?

Each module is audited and one of three things happens: it gets rebuilt as a Shopify Function, App Proxy integration, or private app; it's replaced by native Shopify functionality or a vetted public app; or it's retired because the underlying need disappears. The audit gives you a clear rebuild/replace/retire decision for every customisation before code is written.

Can Shopify Plus handle our B2B operations?

For most mid-market B2B operations, yes. Shopify Plus B2B supports company hierarchies, customer-specific catalogues, custom price lists, payment terms, draft orders, and quote workflows. Very deep B2B with complex tier pricing, approval chains, or shared shopping carts may still favour Adobe Commerce — that's a decision we help you make in discovery, not after build starts.

Should we move to Shopify or Shopify Plus?

It depends on revenue, B2B needs, checkout customisation, and multi-store requirements. Plus unlocks Checkout Extensibility, the B2B API, multi-store, Shopify Flow at scale, and customer account extensions — features standard Shopify cannot deliver. Most merchants migrating from Adobe Commerce land on Plus; smaller Magento Open Source stores often fit standard Shopify.

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

Typical mid-market migrations run 3–5 months. A simple catalogue with few customisations and standard integrations can be done in 6–10 weeks. Stores with deep B2B logic, ERP integrations, hundreds of custom modules, or large historical data sets often take 5–9 months. We give a calibrated estimate after a discovery audit.

What about our ERP and shipping integrations?

Every integration is remapped onto Shopify. ERP (SAP, NetSuite, MS Dynamics, custom), CRM, payment gateways, shipping/3PL, PIM, and custom APIs are rebuilt against Shopify's Admin GraphQL, webhooks, and App Proxy. Each integration is tested in a staging environment before go-live and monitored after launch.

Do we keep our order and customer history?

Yes. Full historical data is migrated — products, categories, orders, customers, addresses, customer groups, store credit, gift cards, reviews, and CMS content. We validate counts and sample records after each transfer pass so nothing slips through silently.
