Shopify Plus Development & Implementation

Shopify Plus unlocks capabilities standard Shopify can't deliver — Checkout Extensibility, the B2B API, multi-store, Functions, and Flow at scale. We know exactly where the boundary is, and where Plus actually earns its keep.

Shopify Plus is a different platform from standard Shopify in ways that matter — not in branding, in actual capability. Checkout Extensibility, the B2B API and Companies model, Shopify Functions at the limits standard plans can't reach, multi-store, customer account extensions, and Flow used as real automation rather than a toy. The merchants who pay for Plus do it because they need at least one of those capabilities, and the rest of the value follows.

We implement, extend, and migrate onto Shopify Plus across theme work, custom apps, B2B configuration, Functions, and Plus-specific integration patterns. For where Plus sits next to standard Shopify and Adobe Commerce, see our platform notes. For the app-build side specifically, see our Shopify app page. If you're moving from Adobe Commerce, our replatforming approach covers that direction in depth.

What Plus actually unlocks.

The capabilities that don't exist on standard Shopify, and that are usually the reason for the upgrade.

Checkout

Checkout Extensibility

Custom checkout UI extensions, post-purchase pages, branded thank-you flows, and Functions for shipping and payment customisations — all on Shopify-hosted checkout, with PCI scope unchanged. The modern replacement for checkout.liquid customisations.

B2B

B2B API & Companies

Native B2B with Companies, Catalogs, customer-specific catalogues and price lists, payment terms, draft orders, and the B2B API for app-driven extensions. The right surface for mid-market B2B that doesn't need Adobe Commerce-grade complexity.

Flow

Shopify Flow at scale

Flow used as real workflow automation — order tagging, fraud handling, B2B approvals, fulfilment routing, and integration triggers — with the higher rate limits and broader trigger surface that Plus enables.

Multi-store

Multi-store management

Multiple expansion stores alongside the primary, managed centrally through the Plus organisation admin (allowance set in your Plus contract). Right for separate brands, separate region operations, or staging environments that need full Shopify primitives rather than a lower-fidelity test surface.

Functions

Scripts → Functions migration

Migration from Shopify Scripts to Functions with parallel-validation and cleanup. Functions are server-side, versioned, faster, and observable in ways Scripts never were. Most migrations also collapse a pile of Scripts into a smaller, cleaner set of Functions.

Accounts

Customer account extensions

Account-page extensions for the new customer accounts experience — order history with custom fields, B2B reordering, subscription management, loyalty status, and merchant-specific account flows that go beyond the default surface.

When upgrading to Plus is the right move.

The four shapes of business that consistently make Plus pay off — and the ones where Advanced is genuinely enough.

Revenue

Revenue threshold

Pure revenue alone rarely justifies the upgrade — there are plenty of $20M+ stores running fine on Advanced. The Plus contract makes more sense once revenue is high enough that fractions of a percent in checkout conversion or operational efficiency outweigh the contract delta.

B2B

B2B operations

If you have wholesale buyers, customer-specific pricing, payment terms, or draft order workflows, the Plus B2B surface is the deciding factor. Companies, Catalogs, and the B2B API don't exist below Plus. This is the most common reason mid-market merchants upgrade.

Multi-store

Multi-store needs

Multiple brands, multiple regions with fully separate operations, or a real staging environment with full Shopify primitives. Markets covers some multi-region cases on standard plans, but multi-store proper requires Plus.

Checkout

Custom checkout requirements

Shipping or payment customisations, custom checkout UI, or post-purchase flows. Standard Shopify checkout is intentionally fixed; Plus + Checkout Extensibility is where bespoke checkout work happens cleanly. If checkout is locked-in revenue-critical, this matters.

From Plus enablement to post-launch.

01

Discovery

Map current store, customisations, integrations, and B2B / multi-store / checkout requirements. Confirm Plus is the right call before commercial conversations with Shopify start.

02

Architecture & Plus Enablement

Plus organisation structure, expansion store planning, B2B Companies model, Functions architecture, Flow workflows, and integration topology. Specified before any of it is enabled.

03

Build (theme + apps + Functions)

Theme work, custom app development, Functions implementation, and Flow workflows in iterative sprints with regular demos. Code review on every change, staging environment on a dedicated expansion store.

04

B2B / Multi-Store Config

Companies, Catalogs, payment terms, customer-specific pricing, and the operational workflows your B2B team actually runs. For multi-store: shared inventory, shared customer base, shared catalogue strategy across stores.

05

06

Post-Launch

Quarterly Shopify API migrations, Functions and Flow optimisation, B2B operational tuning, and ongoing development. Smooth handoff to your team, or an ongoing support relationship.

Shopify Plus, answered.

When does Shopify Plus pay off?

Plus earns its keep in three shapes: B2B operations needing the B2B API and Companies model, merchants needing Checkout Extensibility for shipping or payment customisations, and brands needing multi-store. Pure revenue alone rarely justifies the upgrade — there are plenty of $20M+ stores running on Advanced. The decision is feature-driven first, revenue-driven second.

How does B2B on Shopify Plus compare to Adobe Commerce?

Shopify Plus B2B has matured fast and now handles the majority of mid-market B2B — Companies, Catalogs, customer-specific pricing, payment terms, draft orders, and the B2B API. Adobe Commerce B2B remains stronger for very deep B2B: complex multi-buyer approval chains, shared shopping carts, requisition lists with sophisticated rules, and ERP-driven negotiated pricing at scale. We help merchants pick honestly rather than defaulting to one or the other.

How do we migrate from Shopify Scripts to Functions?

Shopify Scripts are being replaced by Shopify Functions for modern checkout and discount customisation. Migration involves auditing every existing Script (line items, shipping, payment, discount), modelling the equivalent Function in Rust or JavaScript, validating output against the Script in parallel, and cutting over once parity is verified. Most merchants ship a small number of Functions to replace a larger pile of Scripts because the model encourages cleaner consolidation.

What's the pricing posture for Shopify Plus?

Plus is contracted directly with Shopify and the pricing model has shifted to a base-plus-revenue-share structure for new contracts. We don't reseller Plus or earn commission from Shopify on it — our advice is platform-honest. We help with the Plus enablement and the technical scoping; the commercial conversation stays between you and Shopify.

How does multi-store work on Shopify Plus?

Plus contracts include multiple expansion stores alongside the primary store, with the exact allowance set in your Plus agreement with Shopify. Each store is operationally a separate Shopify instance with its own admin, theme, products, and orders. Shopify provides the Plus organisation admin to manage them centrally, and tools like Shopify Markets layer on top for single-store multi-region. The right model depends on whether you need fully separate operations or one storefront serving multiple regions.

Can we run headless on Shopify Plus?

Yes. Plus supports Hydrogen storefronts deployed to Oxygen or your own infrastructure, the Storefront API for any custom front-end, and headless checkout via Shopify-hosted checkout with Checkout Extensibility on top. Headless adds development cost and ongoing operational responsibility. We recommend it when there's a real reason — non-standard UX, app reuse, multiple front-ends — rather than as a default architecture.

How long does a Shopify Plus migration take?

From standard Shopify or Advanced to Plus, the technical migration itself is straightforward — most of the work is layering on the Plus-only capabilities (Checkout Extensibility, B2B, Functions, Flow at scale) rather than rebuilding the store. From Adobe Commerce or another platform to Plus, plan on 3–5 months for a typical mid-market migration. We give a calibrated estimate after a discovery audit.
